Wow, now THIS is something i can relate to! The best present is the personal one, the inside joke. I'm in high-school, which makes the scene a little different, but it still states the value of personal attachment. I met this girl, who is THE it-girl in my school, the girl that everyone buys fancy dinners and wants to be with, she is now one of my best friends (with benefits). When we first met, we really clicked. We started to hang out and soon we got to an inside joke: "Cookie". (I won't tell you what it's about cause it doesn't really matter.) One day when we hung out by her locker I got hold of her combination, and this is where it all started: One time, I put a Subway Cookie (cost: 1$) in her locker, without name or anything. There was no need to mention that i was the guilty one, since "cookie" was OUR thing. It was probably the cheapest gift ever, but nevertheless the most appreciated. That day she called me and we set up our first date. During our dating, i always had a little surprise for her, it was kinda our thing. I could bring hot cocoa with whipped cream or a pair of gloves (since she said that she was cold the day before). I only brought small, thoughtful things and she loved them (=me)
This went on until this Christmas, when I wanted to give her something special. I bought a hoodie, size X-Large and reeeeeaaally comfortable, with the Cookie Monster on it (H&M, 30$). I wrapped it in 2x2 meters of bubble wrap, and wrapped THAT in two other layers of paper since everybody loves both bubble wrap and to tear their chrismas gifts :P
To that, I wrote a little poem. Not a cheesy one, nor a super serious one, just an honest poem about her and I.
We had lunch the 22nd, and a gave her the gift. She got so moved that she started crying (not the dramatic way, the cute way, just a silent tear) and she was was totally breath taken for another ten minutes. After that, she was assured that I was a keeper. Money spent: less than 40$. Love won: Infinite.
